Every day, we at Staver Accident Injury Lawyers, P.C., hear about the unfortunate events that led to our client’s injuries, due to no fault of their own. Unfortunately, these events oftentimes impact the remainder of their lives. The Staver Accident Injury Lawyers, P.C. accident scholarship was created to give hope to students who were involved in an accident, and assist them in achieving their educational goals.

This year, we are happy to announce the second annual Staver Accident Injury Lawyers, P.C. accident scholarship recipient, Husnah Khan, a first-year law student at Wayne State University School of Law. Husnah is currently involved in the Women’s Law Caucus Student Organization and has an impressive background in leadership and service organizations. She hopes to become a lawyer to help those who cannot afford legal representation. Husnah’s essay about being rear-ended struck us deeply. We admire her perseverance and determination to offset the obstacles she was facing after her accident.

Our 2015 winning essay is found below. Congratulations to our personal injury scholarship winner, Husnah. We wish her the best of luck as she continues her education and pursues her career!

It was July 19, 2012, one day before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. I was sitting in the driver’s seat of my car at a red light, patiently waiting for the light to turn green. I heard a loud crash and the next thing I remember, I was standing outside of my car, hands trembling, trying to dial 9-1-1. A man had rear-ended me, and his car had been traveling between 40 to 50 miles per hour. I was diagnosed with having a concussion, and since that day, I have suffered from the inability to concentrate, memory loss, severe headaches, neck pain, dizziness, vision problems, jaw pain, and weakness/soreness in my arms and my legs. I have been treating with medical providers since May of 2013. I was terminated from my job in September of 2013 due to injuries sustained from my auto accident. I have been unemployed since then since my doctors did not clear me to return to work. I now have clearance to apply for work with the instructions that work restrictions will be enforced under the guidance of my doctors, if necessary.

Before my accident, I was scoring 170s on my practice LSAT exams. After my accident, my score dropped dramatically. I took the LSAT three times after my accident, and my dedication, resilience, and medication management gave me the opportunity to see my score increase. Although I still suffer from the physical and cognitive problems that I mentioned above, I am thankful for the fact that I am alive. It has taken me time to accept the fact that my cognitive abilities are different from what they were before, but I am confident that my work ethic and my desire to learn will provide me with a foundation that I can rely upon throughout law school.

The physical pain that I experience on a daily basis cannot be measured. It has prevented me from running every day like I used to do during my undergraduate career. It has prevented me from praying five times a day like I used to. Despite the challenges that my accident has caused me, it has taught me many invaluable lessons. I learned how to adopt new studying techniques as I realized that my ability to concentrate for long periods of time was no longer a technique that I could rely upon. I learned to rely on my family members for support and to let them assist me whenever I need the help. Ultimately, I have learned that the best teacher in life is experience, and I look forward to the future where I can enjoy many more experiences that contribute to my personal growth and allow me to appreciate the sheer joy of being alive. The accident also taught me how effective lawyers are as they work diligently to enforce the rules. I look forward to graduating from law school so that I can assist individuals in the way that my lawyer has assisted me.
