Staying Safe on Labor Day Weekend

by Jared Staver in Personal Injury

Everyone looks forward to Labor Day weekend so that they can enjoy an excursion at the lake, beach party, picnic in the park, backyard barbecue, or even a getaway. Although this long holiday weekend often leads to happy memories, it can be hazardous if certain safety precautions are disregarded. To help you and your family enjoy a safe, injury-free Labor Day weekend, Staver Accident Injury Lawyers, P.C. has compiled this list of Labor Day weekend safety tips.

If you’re involved in an accident over Labor Day Weekend, call Staver Accident Injury Lawyers, P.C. at (312) 236-2900 to find out how we can help you.

Drive Safely

If you’re planning on driving for a Labor Day weekend getaway, you should make safe driving a top priority. The roads will likely be packed with drivers so you should get a good night’s sleep before the road trip, stop frequently, avoid distractions, and ask others to drive if possible. In addition, it’s a good idea to visit a mechanic to get your car inspected before the road trip and pack a vehicle emergency kit with jumper cables, a flashlight, and tools.

Drink in Moderation

Alcohol is usually involved in Labor Day festivities. If you plan on drinking, you should set a limit on how much you will consume and drink glasses of water in between drinks to stay hydrated. By doing so, you can avoid serious accidents and injuries and feeling miserable all weekend long.

Grill with Caution

Since many Labor Day celebrations involve grilling hot dogs, hamburgers, steak, chicken, and a variety of other delicious foods, you should grill with caution. Be sure to follow the grill manufacturer’s instructions, use utensils with long handles, and keep the grill away from the house, tree branches, or anything that could cause it to catch fire. Additionally, refrain from adding charcoal starter fluid when coals have been ignited, ensure all gas connections are tightly secured and in good shape, and keep children and pets away from the grill.

Wear Sunscreen

The sun’s UV rays can damage your skin in only 15 minutes. For this reason, it’s crucial that you and your family wear broad spectrum sunscreen throughout the entire weekend. Even if it’s cloudy outside, sunscreen can protect you and your loved ones from burns, discomfort, and skin cancer. Sunscreen should also be paired with shade, hats, sunglasses, and other sun protectors.

Swim & Boat Safely

If your Labor Day weekend plans consist of swimming and/or boating, you should be very careful. Children should be supervised during swimming or boating, life jackets should be worn, a lifeguard should be present, and sunscreen should be applied and reapplied as needed. It’s also smart to check the weather and water conditions before swimming and/or boating as well as throughout the day since water temperatures can be surprisingly cold.
