Fatal Motor Vehicle Statistics

by Jared Staver in Auto Accidents

Each year, fatal motor vehicle accidents take the lives of thousands of people. In most instances, these accidents are caused by driver negligence like drunk driving, distracted driving, speeding, and failure to adhere to traffic laws.

The National Security Council (NSC) recently published Injury Facts 2017 which includes fatal motor vehicle statistics that demonstrate just how common and devastating fatal motor vehicle accidents are in the United States.

If you have lost a loved one in a fatal motor vehicle accident that was caused by someone else’s negligence, contact a Chicago fatal attorney at Staver Accident Injury Lawyers, P.C. at (312) 236-2900.

NSC’s Injury Facts 2017 Findings

NSC’s Injury Facts 2017 publication lists various statistics regarding fatal motor vehicle accidents. It starts by mentioning that between the years of 1912 and 2015, the rate of motor vehicle fatalities compared to cars on the road decreased by 96 percent. In 1912, there were 3,100 fatalities and only 950,000 registered vehicles. In 2015, however, there were 37,757 deaths and 263 million registered vehicles.

Although there was no mileage data available in 1912, the mileage death rate in 2015 was 1.21 per 100,000,000 miles traveled. This number rose by 3 percent from 2014 when the mileage death rate was 1.17. The NSC also looked at the type of crashes that led to motor vehicle accidents in 2015 and found the following:

  • 15,300 fatalities from collisions of two or more motor vehicle accidents
  • 10,900 fatalities from crashes with a fixed object like a guardrail
  • 6,700 fatalities from accidents involving pedestrians
  • 3,500 fatalities from non-collisions in which the first event that produced damage was a jackknife or overturn
  • 1,100 fatalities from collisions involving pedal cyclists
  • 110 fatalities from accidents with railroad vehicles
  • 100 fatalities from other accidents that were not specified in the above categories

These statistics prove just how frequently motor vehicles cause fatalities and how important it is to practice safe driving every time you get behind the wheel.
