by Jared Staver in Auto Accidents

Illinois Sees a Decline in Fatal Crashes

There were 1,009 car accident fatalities in 2018. In 2019, there have been 51 fewer fatalities, for a total of 958. This is an encouraging statistic, as fatalities have totaled over 1,000 since 2016. Further analysis of the data for this year reveals the following:

  • 229 fatalities involved people who were not using a seatbelt.
  • 283 fatalities involved people who were using a seatbelt.
  • 172 fatalities involved unlicensed drivers.

Who is at Risk

When you look at the statistics from the perspective of who is involved in fatal accidents, it paints a startling picture:

  • 163 pedestrians were killed.
  • 133 motorcyclists were killed.
  • 115 fatalities involved semi-trucks.

It is surprising to see that so many pedestrians were killed, but also surprising to see that semi-trucks pose a special danger to other motorists.

Where Fatal Accidents Are Occurring

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Chicago metro area has the highest number of fatalities – there have been 286 fatal car accidents in Cook County alone, which an increase of 17 over 2018. However, other counties in Illinois have also seen double-digit numbers of fatal car accidents:

  • McLean County: 14 fatalities
  • Kankakee County: 20 fatalities
  • Will County: 51 fatalities
  • St. Clair County: 24 fatalities
  • Madison County: 36 fatalities

While there have been 51 fewer fatalities across the state this year, it’s helpful to give some consideration to how fatal car accidents occur.

Common Causes of Fatal Car Accidents in Illinois

Here are the most common causes of fatal car accidents that we see as Illinois car accident lawyers:

Reckless Driving

Every time an Illinois driver engages in reckless driving, they put everyone on the road in danger. As you are driving, be on the lookout for reckless drivers as their risky actions can lead to fatal accidents.

Road Rage

Drivers who become angry or frustrated while behind the wheel create a dangerous situation for others. If you notice a driver who has road rage, allow them to pass and refrain from speaking to them. A few angry word exchanges may eventually turn into a fatal car crash.

Erratic Lane Changes

An abrupt lane change can cause a driver to crash into another car and prompt a fatal incident. If you see a driver who is changing lanes constantly and aggressively, try to distance yourself from them as much as possible.

Failure to Stay in the Right Lane

In addition to erratic lane changes, the inability to stay in the right lane may contribute to a fatal car crash. If a driver swerves out of their path, they may cause a head-on collision that results in fatalities.

Driving on the Incorrect Side

Unfortunately, drivers who are impaired or confused often drive on the wrong side of the road. This is a continuous concern, and a significant cause of fatal car crashes in the state of Illinois.

Speeding

When drivers ignore the speed limit, they may cause a fatal crash because it can inhibit their perception and reaction time as well as their braking capability. If you are driving near a speeding driver, you should try to maintain distance.
