Chicago has a large and avid running culture. Unfortunately, runners often have a difficult time safely navigating the congested sidewalks, paths, and roads. Heavy traffic and careless drivers can turn a healthy pastime into a nightmare in a split second. There are a number of intersections in Chicago that are considered extremely dangerous for runners and other pedestrians. These intersections see a great deal of pedestrian-vehicle accidents – or terrifying near misses.

Fleet Feet’s Most Dangerous Chicago Intersections
Fleet Feet Sports, a popular running store, spoke with Chicago runners directly through their online communities on Reddit and Twitter to compile a list of dangerous intersections for Chicago’s runners. They determined that most dangerous intersections for runners are:
- Roosevelt and Union near UIC
- Diversey and Lake Shore Drive in Lincoln Park
- Kedzie, Logan, and Milwaukee in Logan Square
- Elston, Irving Park, and Monticello
- Fullerton, Halsted, and Lincoln
- Fullerton and Damen west of DePaul
- Ashland and Cortland near the Kennedy Expressway
- Ardmore and Sheridan in Edgewater
- Clark and LaSalle between Lincoln Park and Old Town
- Sangamon and Jackson in the West Loop
- Damen, North, and Milwaukee in Wicker Park
- Waveland and Kenmore behind Wrigley Field, during baseball season
- All Chicago alleyways
Some of these dangerous intersections include where three busy roads meet. These are relatively common in the grid-like city due to some lengthy diagonal roads like Elston, Milwaukee, and Lincoln. These six-corner intersections have high traffic and confusing crosswalks, which make it difficult for runners to avoid vehicles even when they have the walk sign.
How Runners Can Recover Compensation After a Car Accident
For enthusiastic runners, being hurt in a car accident is devastating. Even seemingly minor injuries can keep them out of their running shoes for weeks or months and greatly decrease their endurance and times. More serious injuries could set them back years in their running careers or make it impossible to run at the distances and speeds of which they were once capable. Catastrophic injuries may end a running career entirely.
Runners who are injured in vehicle-pedestrian accidents should immediately contact a personal injury lawyer. An experienced lawyer will understand the consequences of physical injuries on runners who hit the pavement every day and see running as an essential part of their lives. How a car accident affects a runner’s ability to get back to the activity in the future – or not at all – needs to be taken into consideration when calculating compensation for losses.
